What is Superelevation

Superelevation meaning

Super elevation is tilting the roadway to help offset centripetal forces developed as the vehicle goes around a curve. Along with friction, they are what keeps a vehicle from going off the road.
In order to counter-act the effect of centrifugal force and reduce the tendency of vehicle to overturn and to skid laterally outwards, pavement outer edge is raised with respect to inner edge. Thus, transverse slope provided is known as Super elevation. Super elevation is represented by “ e ”.

Maximum and minimum super-elevation

Depends on slow moving vehicle and heavy loaded trucks with high CG. Indian Road Congress (IRC) specifies a maximum super-elevation of 7 percent for plain and rolling terrain, while that of hilly terrain is 10 percent and urban road is 4 percent. The minimum super elevation is 2-4 percent for drainage purpose, especially for large radius of the horizontal curve.
