Hello Engineers, are you going for or preparing for a civil design engineer job interview, here in this article I am going to share something that is very important to you. In Civil Engineering Design job interview, you should get prepared with some concept about certain topics.

Civil Design Engineering Interview

First of all you should have knowledge of design basics. You should get your hands clean on design without using software.

There are very few firms which hire B.Tech students for structural designing. So they do not expect you to know any advanced concepts, all they want to check is whether your basics are clear and whether it'll be possible to train you easily.

Following are some important topics you should go prepared with for interview

  • Shear force and bending moment diagrams (All types of support conditions and loading). This is often the deal maker or deal breaker so don't mess it up.

  • Basic terms like cover, bonding, anchor length, etc. For steel designing, it could be ultimate strength, yield strength, difference between the two, likewise.

  • Questions like which is the better type of connection, welded or bolted. You've got to give rational answers keeping in mind factors like economy, need for a safer design criteria, etc. I'm not saying be diplomatic, but a design consultant will always look to minimize the cost so if you mention as many factors it'll be good.

  • Lastly, don't just assume that only design related questions would be asked. I was asked questions about estimation and cost analysis, as well as geotechnical engineering. Be prepared, at least with the basics.
The key points and concepts discussed above are sufficient for you to get a design engineering job. However you should have enough self-confidence with you.
