What is IS code (Indian Standard Code)

Civil engineers engaged in construction activities of large projects usually have to refer to a number of IS codes for many types of structures such as buildings, roads, steel structures etc. A large number of Indian Standard (IS) codes are available that are used in almost every aspect of civil Engineering. During student life of civil engineering one normally uses only a few of them depending on the subject they are studyng in classroom.
At the end of this article there is a list of some IS codes quite frequently used by construction-newbies, students and construction engineers.

Updates in IS codes

In Civil Engineering discipline, codes are changed based on research, suggestions & recommendations made by institutions,  practical conditions, climate & topography changes etc.
The codes will change and engineers has to cope up with the latest ones as when available as lawyers do for changing IPC rules.
Assume you had a unexpected high magnitude earthquake in a region not meant to happen. In such cases or many similar cases, The future structural design of the building in that region has to be modified to a higher magnitude tolerance. 
These changes are based on recommendations provided by committees formed by Bureau of Indian Standards BIS. The changes are not limited to to Civil Engineering but for all standards related to different fields released by BIS.
